We were on tour in small post industrial towns throughout the country, and we had stopped at first in Clifton park, which was somewhere in the west, and had a booming tourism business through remaking it’s downtown in retro and historical ways. We stayed in a b&b that had a visiting jazz musician as it’s concierge, who traveled with an above ground hot tub that got set up on the back deck (which, without the hot tub was sitting inches above a huge pond with crystal clear water and underwater lilies). We went out to explore the town (with a group of college friends? I didn’t know them), and found a small hot dog stand that boasted an original “mini baby grand piano” that seemed to me to be an accordion split in half and flattened, but with electronic elements and beats. One of our friends rushed in with a local paper and said “he’s coming here tomorrow - the grey man. I’m surprised he’d show his face” and plopped down the paper on the counter. The sculptor of Stalin’s bust was coming to town, and would be met with many critics. Why did he make such a statue? Did he do it earnestly? What does the material choice of limestone say about his intentions? Etc etc We had been tracking him for months. This was our chance To be continued…
